The St Croix Leatherback Project
By the Sea Turtle Census Initiative – A project @ The Ocean Foundation

From leatherbacks to loggerheads, 6 of the 7 species of sea turtles are threatened or
Wahine Honu our Nesting Turtle
endangered at the hand of humans. This month we adopted a nesting leatherback. We will be able to follow her this season as she should nest several times! We also adopted her nests and supported the research at Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge, with a donation to the Sea Turtle Census.

Since 1977, the St. Croix Leatherback Project at Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge (US Fish and Wildlife Service) has performed research, monitoring and conservation of these giant turtles. The Sea Turtle Census has been working cooperatively with the USFWS for the past four years to provide extensive support for students & volunteers assisting with these projects, thus training the next generation of our ocean’s advocates. Follow Reef Box & The St. Croix Leatherback Project on Facebook & Instagram to learn more about his program. Scientific and conservation studies from last season at Sandy Point will be presented by Sandy Point's Research Assistants at the International Sea Turtle Symposium February 1-9 in Charleston, SC.
